The most powerful writer of our time: Stephen King. In 55 years, he’s published 63 novels and sold a staggering 350,000,000 copies. I deep-dived into his interviews to discover his secrets. Here’re 8 frameworks I found (10x your writing quality):
King is the master of horror. His net worth: $500,000,000. But he was rejected 80 times before his first published book. Here's his advice on achieving success:
Inspiration is a Decision King said, “Amateurs sit and wait”. Professionals get to work. Sometimes your best writing comes when you least feel like it. And every word builds towards something great. You decide when it’s time to write. Not your motivation.
The Road to Hell Great writing is lean writing. And the common culprit behind bloat? Adverbs. We use them to emphasise points. But the truth is they weaken them. See the difference:
Door Open, Door Closed. King explains that great writing comes with careful editing. The magic is in the rewrite. The key is to split the process into separate phases: For the first draft, write like the door's closed. Quick. Messy. Rough. Then rewrite with the door open.
Goals Get Results King sets two goals: 2000 words a day. A finished first draft in 3 months. A consistent writer is a successful writer. It’s all too easy to fall victim to perfection and overthinking. But volume is the answer. Commit and persist.
Make it Easy The hardest part of writing is the start. King begins each session at the page he was most happy with before. This makes it simple to snap back into flow - saving you from wasting valuable early energy.
Simple Sells. Writing is less about good grammar and more good rhythm. He explains: the aim is to “make the reader welcome”. You do this by writing conversationally. Be clear. Not clever.
Kill Your Darlings It’s easy to get attached to your writing. But the reality is most of it is holding you back. A book could be a blog post. A blog post a thread. A thread a tweet. Always ask: Can I say it in less? Your audience will thank you for it.
The Joy Factor King believes: “If you can do it for joy, you can do it forever.” Writing is a mirror of your thoughts. Passion shows through. So follow your curiosity. Be brave. Write what you want, not what you think people want. Success becomes a matter of when, not if.
